How geography effects peoples occupations.
Link: Yesterday we learned about the American Indians clothing. What were their clothes made out of? Why did they make their materials out of this?
Engage: Ask students what they think the word occupation means. Allow students to answer. Explain that the occupation means the job that you do. What do you think the occupation of a man in the Powhatan tribe would be? Explain that the mans job in the hunting and fishing. That the men would go on hunts and bring back food, explain that the men would make tools out of the bones from animals they would kill or rocks and sticks they found. After explaining this ask the students, now that we know what the men's jobs were, what do you think the women would do? The women's job were to make the houses, create fires inside the houses and to farm the crops.
Active: Today we are going to be men and women from the community. We are going to get in groups of about 4 and each group is going to be a family. In your family you are going to have to make everything you need to survive. The men and women are going to make the houses and the crops and the men are going to hunt for the food. In the hallway set up hula hoops taped to the ground.Give the boys straws to throw through the hula hoop. Each group must take turns with the other groups and each time they throw the straws into the hula hoop they will win a deer (cut out of paper). The families are working together to get everything they need to survive.Give women sticks and paper to make the homes and crops. They can cut the crops out of paper. At the end of the time they have to get their food have the students compile all their food into a pile. Count up the amount of food and take a few pieces from each group. You can explain that in every tribe each family is required to give a small portion to the chief.
Reflection: Have students clean up and come to the carpet. Why do you think the men and women had different jobs? Why was it important to for each person in the community to have their own job? What did you think of your experience as an American Indian?
Now and then: Tomorrow we are going to have our last lesson on the Powhatan Indians which is going to the American Indian Museum. Make sure you are all looking for what we learned about at this museum.
