How Geography effects the food we eatLink: Last time we talked about the houses the Powhatan Indians lived in. What type of houses did they live in? What were they made of? Why did they make their houses this way?
Engage: Read the story "Life in a Longhouse Village by Bobbie Kalman" Read pages 12-17 which discuss the importance of food. The three sources of food are farming, hunting and fishing. The animals that are important to the Powhatan were deer, bears, rabbits and others. The would farm "the three sisiters" which consisted of corn, beans and squash that are grown together at the same time. The Powhatan tribe also lived on the coastland and fish became a source of food. Active: Today you are going to get a chance to try some of the foods the American Indians ate! You are going to get a snack bag with the different food and I want you to figure out what each of the foods are. Give the students a sample snack bag of different options of foods. Have them fill in the chart of what each food is and how the American Indians got this food. Reflect: Bring students to the carpet. Have them talk to a partner about what their favorite food was and why. Also have them plan out what their meals would be if they were Powhatan Indians and how the would feel about that. Now and then: Tomorrow we are going to talk about the clothing and games the Powhatan Indians wore. Extension: Research the life cycle of the Three Sisters.
